Since the last fifteen years the Burmese have been controlled and led by the military junta. Recently there have been waves of peaceful anti-government protest by the citizens, that have been met with harsh force and brutality by the Myanmar government. It seems there had been a growing unease in the population regarding the economic status of the country, which was ranked among the 20 poorest countries in the world according to the United Nations who blamed the economic problems on the inept leadership of the military junta that spends large amount of money maintaining one of the world’s largest armies. In late 2006, the cost of basic commodities began rising sharply in Burma with rice, eggs, and cooking oil increasing by 30-40%. On February 22, 2007, a small group of individuals protested the current state of consumer prices in the country although the protest was small and not directed at the military junta, it was the first street protest seen or at least a decade. Officials jailed nine of the protesters. On August 15, 2007 the government removed subsidies on fuel causing a rapid and unannounced increase in prices. The government, which has a monopoly on fuel sales, raised prices of fuel from about $1.40 to $2.80 a gallon, and boosted the price of natural gas by about 500 percent. This increase in fuel prices led to an increase in food prices. Soon afterwards, the Monks began to put the Myanmar Junta in Tight Spot. Since then there has been a worldwide protest against the military rule in Burma. Countries are laying sanctions in the hope of pressurizing the government to negotiate with the people who are dying for democracy. The entire struggle and day to day activites have been logged on wikepedia, I feel extremly disheartened to say that my country India, is suppotting the burmese military. While most countries expressed support for protests and urged the Junta to implement far-reaching reforms India maintained commitment to the notion of noninterference and even showed tacit support to the regime.
